Staff Engineer
GMST delivers and maintains highly innovative global products and set components of core functions that provide a seamless, consistent, and connected experience for our Merchants. As a Staff Engineer on our team, you will help lead the organization to the next generation interactive experience across channels.
Staff Engineers serve as key leaders on the Global Merchant Services Technology team. As this role will play heavy influence in the success of our goals, we are searching for candidates with strong fundamental experience in distributed software development and design principles while also blending technology strategy, executive communications, and influencing behaviors. The person in this role will drive the vision, technology design, engineering, development, and rollout for multiple products, and software utilities across the platform, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of American Express and its merchants while helping get results for Merchant Technologies. Our leaders are role models the culture of enterprise thinking by helping to develop the best agile practices and bringing partners and colleagues along.
Responsibilities
- Hands-on collaboration with business and technology leaders, stakeholders, product owners, Architects, and Engineers to define, develop, test and validate technical solutions to help drive customer-first product roadmap enabling business outcomes.
- Drive transformation, innovation and lead robust engineering development within a fast paced, agile environment while understanding and managing competing priorities.
- Implement innovative technologies and demonstrate courage to fail.
- Engage in hands-on design of both high-level and detailed technical designs and ensure alignment of strategy, architecture, tools/methods to execute product and strategy roadmaps.
- Contribute to the review and analysis of business needs and user stories.
- Forward thinking with an ability to implement for the short term while designing for the long term.
- Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and able to exploit them to their optimal potential
- Participate in strategic discussions, thinking outside of the box, and challenge the status-quo
- Ensure compliance with security regulations.
- Collaborate with Enterprise Architecture and other Enterprise solutions teams (OneData, OneAmex and OneIdentity etc) for solutions and implement the learnings within GMST organization.
- Contribute to Technology community by actively participating in team and company-wide architecture and engineering discussions and forums.
- Forward thinking with an ability to implement for the short term but at the same time design for the long term.
- Drive both high-level and detailed technical designs and conduct design reviews as well as hands-on knowledge of full stack coding and infrastructure platform.
- Responsible for health and quality of the code across the portfolio, including all aspects of testing unit, functional and performance and CI/CD.
- Ability to adapt to new technologies and learn quickly.
- Be a Change Agent and willing to challenge status quo while helping to drive the necessary changes.
- Introduce new Engineering paradigms, techniques, and solutions.
- Lead Merchant Payments and Reconciliation initiatives in support Digital and Self-service initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications
- 12+ years of hands-on Engineering experience in a complex environment and/or comparable experience.
- Bachelor's Degree in computer science, Computer Science Engineering, or related field required; Masters is a plus.
- Hands-on experience with Reactive and Functional programming, ELK, Java, Vert.X, APIs, Spark, Scala, Kafka, Gridgain, Apache ignite, Cassandra, Full Stack, Python, PostgreSQL, OneData, DB/Caches (Elastic/Redis), DB2 and eCP infrastructure, Jenkins and In Memory Computing.
- Knowledge of business process management and Open Source technologies (JBPM) to drive new generation of process implementation.
- Successful Engineering and deployment of large-scale web products in an Agile product development environment.
- Well versed in the concept of minimum viable product and engineering to support an MVP based rollout.
- Experience with hands-on collaboration with Architects, Engineers and Directors to define, test and validate solution requirements and technical implementation approaches.
- Ability to direct a team and negotiate and influence stakeholders across the organization.
- Ability to build long term relationships and work with a broad range of Engineers, Architects and Principal Architects.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with a proven ability to influence technical and non-technical audiences including those at the Executive leadership level.
- Demonstrated experience coaching, mentoring, and developing technical professionals.
- Possess wide-ranging experience and ready to roll up the sleeves to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
- Knowledge of Amex Acquiring and Merchant Payments platforms and business processes is a plus.
