Position Summary
The Child Speech Therapist is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and treating speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders in children. This role involves working closely with children and their families to develop and implement individualised therapy plans that cater to each child's unique needs. The therapist will also collaborate with educators, healthcare professionals, and other therapists to ensure a comprehensive approach to the child's development and well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assessment and Diagnosis:
- Conduct comprehensive evaluations of speech, language, and communication skills.
- Diagnose speech and language disorders and determine appropriate interventions.
- Use standardised tests, observations, and other diagnostic tools to assess a child's abilities.
- Treatment Planning and Implementation:
- Develop and implement individualised treatment plans tailored to the child's specific needs.
- Use evidence-based practices to address speech, language, and communication challenges.
- Provide direct therapy to children in individual or group settings.
- Adjust treatment plans based on ongoing assessment and progress.
- Family and Caregiver Support:
- Educate and counsel families on their child's condition and treatment plans.
- Provide resources and training to parents and caregivers to support therapy at home.
- Involve families in the therapy process to ensure continuity of care.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with other professionals, including educators, pediatricians, psychologists, and occupational therapists, to provide holistic care.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case conferences.
- Communicate effectively with all stakeholders involved in the child's care.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and reports.
- Prepare and submit reports as required by regulatory bodies, educational institutions, or healthcare providers.
- Ensure compliance with all legal and ethical guidelines in documentation and reporting.
- Professional Development:
- Stay informed about the latest developments in speech therapy and paediatric care.
- Participate in continuing education opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Maintain professional certification and licensure as required by local regulations.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or a related field.
- Current certification and licensure as a Speech Therapist (as required by your region).
- Experience working with children, preferably in a clinical or educational setting.
- Strong understanding of childhood speech and language development.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Patience, empathy, and a passion for helping children achieve their full potential.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with specific speech disorders such as stuttering, apraxia, or phonological disorders.
- Familiarity with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices.
- Bilingual abilities are a plus.
Work Environment:
- The position may involve working in a variety of settings, including clinics, schools, and homes.
- May require travel to different locations depending on client needs.
- Flexible hours may be required to accommodate the schedules of clients and their families.
