SharePoint administrators play a critical role in BT. This role is supporting SharePoint op-prem and cloud enabled collaboration, improving productivity, ensuring data security, and driving digital transformation within organizations through effective management and optimization of SharePoint environments. Will be troubleshooting complex faults and L3 support tickets in PAN BT. Will be driving the on-prem SharePoint migration to MS cloud SharePoint with rest of the BT SharePoint team.
SharePoint administrator will be part of a wider Device & Collaboration support team who are realizing our vision to make BT a digital, lean-agile company, and you will be delivering our public and internal commitments
Responsibilities :
- You are responsible for managing the infrastructure that supports collaboration, document management, and information sharing within the organization. Ensure that SharePoint environments are properly configured, optimized, and maintained to meet business needs. Mange Windows Server at On-prem SP farm.
- You are responsible for implementing security measures, access controls, and compliance policies to protect sensitive information and ensure regulatory compliance. They manage user permissions, data encryption, audit logs, and security configurations to safeguard organizational data.
- You need to provide user support, training, and guidance to help employees effectively use SharePoint features and tools. You need to troubleshoot issues, answer queries, and create documentation and training materials to enhance user adoption and productivity.
- You need to facilitate collaboration and communication by configuring team sites, collaboration features, social networking tools, and communication sites within SharePoint. You would expect to integrate SharePoint with other collaboration platforms and tools to streamline communication and teamwork.
- You need to Manage SharePoint farms, including server configuration, topology design, and performance optimization. Monitor farm health, managing services, and troubleshooting farm-level issues. Planning for high availability, disaster recovery, and scalability.
- You are expected to have very good Understanding of database concepts, such as creating, maintaining, and optimizing SharePoint content databases. This includes tasks like database backup and restore, indexing, performance tuning, and capacity planning. Diagnosing SQL Server-related issues, performing routine maintenance tasks (e.g., index rebuilds, statistics updates), and applying patches or service packs to ensure SQL Server reliability and security
- Data Migration and Integration: Assisting in data migration tasks, such as moving SharePoint databases between servers or versions, integrating external data sources with SharePoint using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), or developing custom data connectors. Implementing HA/DR solutions for SQL Server to ensure SharePoint data availability and minimize downtime. This may include technologies like SQL Server AlwaysOn Availability Groups, database mirroring, or clustering.
- As a SharePoint Administrator you need to Plan and execute SharePoint version upgrades or migrations between environments (e.g., SharePoint On-premises to SharePoint Online). Assessing compatibility, performing pre-upgrade checks, and managing migration timelines.
- Change Management and Adoption -Implementing change management processes for SharePoint updates, patches, and configuration changes.
Skills :
- SharePoint Installation and Configuration: Installing and configuring SharePoint Server or SharePoint Online environments. Setting up service applications, web applications, and site collections. Configuring authentication methods, such as Windows Authentication, SAML, or Azure AD integration. Planning for high availability, disaster recovery, and scalability. - Site Collection and Site Management:Implementing governance policies and best practices for site owners and users Create and manage site collections, subsites, and site templates. Configure site settings, navigation, and permissions.
- User and Group Management: Manage user accounts, groups, and permissions within SharePoint. Implement role-based access control (RBAC) and managing SharePoint groups. Configure user profiles and My Sites for personalization and social collaboration.
- Understanding SharePoint Databases: Familiarity with the structure and content of SharePoint databases is crucial. Knowing how SharePoint organizes data in content databases, configuration databases, and service application databases will help you plan and execute the migration effectively. Being able to extract data from SharePoint databases using T-SQL queries is essential. You may need to transform data formats, clean up data inconsistencies, and prepare data for migration to the target environment.
- SQL Data Migration and Integration Performing data migration tasks, such as moving SharePoint databases between servers or versions, integrating external data sources with SharePoint using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), or developing custom data connectors. Writing T-SQL scripts to automate migration tasks can save time and reduce manual errors. This includes scripts for extracting data, transforming it as needed, and loading it into the destination environment. After data migration, you should be able to use T-SQL skills to help you perform validation checks to ensure data integrity and completeness. This includes comparing source and target data, verifying metadata, and conducting end-to-end testing.
- Disaster Recovery and Backup: SharePoint admins implement backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies to protect SharePoint data and ensure business continuity. They perform regular backups, test recovery procedures, and maintain documentation to mitigate risks and recover from system failures or data loss incidents.
- SharePoint Integration: Knowledge of Integrating SharePoint with other systems and technologies, such as Active Directory for user authentication, SQL Server for data storage, third-party applications via APIs, and custom authentication providers. Automate SharePoint Online sites have provisions with Power Automate. Good to have knowledge on HTML, CSS, jQuery and JavaScript.
- Monitoring and Troubleshooting: Monitoring SharePoint performance, diagnosing issues, and troubleshooting common problems like authentication issues, performance bottlenecks, and service outages.
- Compliance and Governance: Implementing governance policies, compliance features, and information management policies to ensure data integrity, security, and regulatory compliance within SharePoint.
Experience :
- Role holder will need 5-8 years experience of managing medium to enterprise sized fairly complex SharePoint On-Prem and SPO Environments.
- Stakeholder management To Senior Manager and occasionally Director level. Can facilitate and manage key stakeholders across the organization, drawing on data and analytical techniques where appropriate, and communicate this to business audiences
- Communications Ability to communicate and tell a story to all levels within a corporate workplace
- Leadership Comfortable managing people in matrix environment
- Quick Learner - Able to pick up and grasp technical concepts.
- SharePoint Farm Administration, Customization, Content Management, Site Collection Management - Need to have these broad range of tasks and responsibilities involved in managing SharePoint On-premises environments effectively.
- SQL Server Configuration, HA/DR, Performance Monitoring and Tuning, Data Migration and Integration, Reporting Services (SSRS),PowerShell Scripting, Troubleshooting and Maintenance and Backup and Restore Strategies These Mandatory skills are crucial for SharePoint administrators who manage the underlying SQL Server infrastructure to support SharePoint On-premises deployments effectively.
- SharePoint Migration and Upgrade- Planning and executing upgrades to newer versions of SharePoint, as well as migrating content and configurations between SharePoint environments (e.g., from SharePoint 2013 to SharePoint 2019). SharePoint On-Prem to SharePoint Online. Power Platform for rebuilding workflows/forms as flows and apps, and managing the migration app for users.
