Job Description

Senior Software Engineer

Interested in developing next-generation web experiences at scale

Are you an experienced frontend engineer with a can do attitude and enthusiasm that inspires others

About Our Team

Our team is responsible for Elsevier.com, the primary corporate website. We provide a performant, secure, and accessible experience to over 4 million unique visitors a month, plus the tools for our editorial teams to publish engaging content in 9 languages across 13 local markets. We use the latest frameworks and tools, lean heavily on automation, and employ a full CD (Continuous Delivery) pipeline to deliver new features in a prompt, reliable manner. We take care of our full stack, from our infrastructure and pipelines, a federated GraphQL data layer, all the way up to our foundational design system.

About The Role

We are looking for a highly experienced React engineer to help take our platform to the next level. We have a strong bias for accessibility, ensuring our website is not only blazing fast, but useful to everyone, no matter how they browse the web. We ship little and often, averaging over 40 deployments per week, and engineers are responsible for their own testing and quality control. As well as delivering features and improvements, you will help develop our team, its culture, and adherence to best practice. You will keep up to date on the latest techniques and tools, and help introduce the best ones into our stack, ensuring nobody on the team is left behind when utilising a new technology or methodology. You will work closely with our engineers, as well as our partners in UX, QE, Product, and analytics teams. We have a robust onboarding program, prioritise developer experience, and most new starters ship to production on their first day.

Responsibilities

  • Planning and implementing new features and improvements to the platform
  • Pairing, mentoring, and reviewing work with the engineers
  • Staying up to date with best practice, and guiding the team to ensure we are adhering to it
  • Contributing to short/medium/long term planning and strategy for our team and the platform in general
  • Optimizing website performance, accessibility, security, reliability, and presentational consistency
  • Resolving complex technical issues

Requirements

  • 5+ Years experience in software engineering
  • Strong Experience in React, NextJS, TypeScript and Node
  • Ability to write and review portions of detailed specifications for the development of system components of moderate complexity.
  • Knowledge of modern software development methodologies (e.g., Agile, XP)
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Extensive knowledge of web performance optimization and accessibility
