Healthcare Technology Innovation Centre (HTIC) is a multi-disciplinary R&D centre located in Chennai. It is a joint initiative of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. HTIC brings together technologists, engineers, doctors, healthcare professionals, industry, and government to develop healthcare technologies for the country. HTIC's vision is to develop technologies that create impact, drive innovation in healthcare, and be a leader known for technical excellence and collaborative spirit.

Role Description

This is a full-time on-site role (which would require 25% of travel) for a Senior Mechanical Engineer for the Image Guided Systems Team at the Healthcare Technology Innovation Centre. The Image Guided Systems Team works on surgical guidance through robotics and navigation. The role involves the design and integration of advanced medical technologies. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to develop innovative surgical devices, ensuring they meet stringent regulatory standards and address the needs of healthcare providers and patients. Your role will involve conceptualising, designing, developing, and thoroughly verifying and validating the mechanical system of the product. We are looking for candidates eager to enhance their skills through comprehensive training and guidance and contribute substantially to our ongoing projects.

Roles and Opportunities for Learning and Exposure:

  • Extract and define mechanical requirements based on the overall product and system requirements.
  • Create the mechanical architecture, ensuring it meets all necessary safety and performance standards.
  • Integrate various mechanical modules and demonstrate the readiness and functionality of the entire mechanical sub-system.
  • Execute the mechanical design for new product development, ensuring products meet specification, cost, and time targets.
  • Design and develop prototypes for surgical navigation systems and robotic assistance devices for total knee arthroplasty.
  • Analyze and test prototypes and each revision of a device.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the integration of mechanical components with electronics, software, and system-level requirements.
  • Support pre-development activities and finalize design specifications.
  • Ensure all mechanical systems work safely and efficiently to meet user needs.
  • Identify deficiencies in mechanical processes and develop improvements.
  • Conducted comprehensive sub-system-level verification and validation to ensure the sub-system met all specifications and requirements.
  • Ensure the sub-system complies with all relevant safety standards (such as IEC 60601 series, biocompatibility, sterilisation validation, etc.), as well as regulatory requirements.
  • Staying updated on industry trends and emerging technologies fosters innovation and ensures competitiveness.

Experience:

4 years of experience: Selected candidates might be offered a full-time position based on skills and experience

Candidates who excel in this full-time position will be considered for the opportunity to pursue a Master of Research / Doctorate at IIT Madras. They will also get exposure to industries with competitive pay packages.

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge in CAD Modelling (Part Modelling, Surface Modelling, Assembly & 2D
  • Drafting). Expert Skill would be a Bonus (Creo / Solidworks / Solidedge / Seimens NX / Fusion360).
  • Knowledge in Mechanical Principles - GD&T, Tolerance Stackup analysis, Kinematics,
  • Engineering Mechanics and Strength of Materials.
  • Knowledge of FEA simulation (Ansys) and kinematics/dynamics simulation (Creo / Solidworks) would be a bonus.
  • Exposure to the development of surgical instruments/jigs/fixtures would be a bonus.
  • Strong background in medical research or the ability to develop knowledge and understanding.
  • Proven experience in mechanical design, development, prototyping and validation.
  • Experience within the medical device industry will be a bonus.
  • Having a solid understanding of safety standards, including the IEC 60601 series, biocompatibility, sterilization validation, quality standards like ISO 13485, and regulatory requirements for CDSCO, FDA, and CE compliance.
  • Ability to identify research gaps and proactively approach problem-solving and innovation.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, capable of working cross-functionally with clinical stakeholders and engineers.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and industry trends in medical devices.
  • Strong organisational skills, capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of knee kinematics, implants, and joint arthroplasty procedures will be appreciated.
  • Exposure to Surgical navigation, robotic assistance, Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality technologies will be appreciated.

Qualification:

Doctorate, Bachelor's, and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering or Equivalent.
