Job description
Responsible for originating and producing impactful stories which may include newsgathering, scripting, editing, outputting, filming and presenting content for BBC News Tamil, based in Chennai.
- Able to deliver for digital, reporting experience and proven skills in generating original newsgathering.
- Work in partnership with other reporters, producers and social teams in Chennai and Delhi.
- Ability to convey story and programme ideas and to contribute fully to the planning process for upcoming news events.
- Demonstrates a commitment to improving diversity in the newsroom and understands how individual differences can benefit the organisation.
- Able to get one's message understood clearly by adopting a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and the nature of information.
- Flexible and adaptable to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities and circumstances.
- Sound understanding of health and safety procedures and how they apply to newsgathering.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities
Some specific responsibilities for this role are:
- Provide timely, specialist and authoritative coverage of news and current affairs and analysis of events in Tamil Nadu in line with the BBC Editorial Guidelines.
- Provide strong ground reports based on the important issues from Tamil Nadu.
- Have effective coordination with BBC News Tamil team in Chennai and Delhi.
- Report for multi-platform outlets, website and social media, mainly in Tamil.
- Advise BBC News Tamil team about news topics and developments on a daily basis.
- Pitch original impactful stories with digital treatments, ensuring they work for online, social and TV platforms.
- Follow safety requirements and instructions, especially in relation to emergencies; and report any accidents, dangerous situations or defects in safety arrangements.
- Expected to work flexibly as required.
Knowledge, skills, training and experience
Essential:
- High level of written and spoken Tamil is essential.
- High level of written and spoken English is desirable.
- Good understanding of social and political issues of Tamil Nadu are desirable.
- Experience of live broadcasting, including live breaking news with good on-screen presence, self-assured microphone voice and ability to communicate effectively with target audience.
- Good understanding of digital platforms and the types of content which perform well.
- Knowledge of and aptitude for information technology and related skills.
- Demonstrable interest and proven track record in social media.
- Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people.
- Demonstrates balanced and impartial judgement. Makes appropriate editorial decisions, taking into account conflicting views where necessary.
- Demonstrable interest in new media, including knowledge of how to maximise a story.
