Job Description: Product Development Engineer Position: Product Development Engineer Reporting to: Senior Product Development Engineer No. of Direct Reports: Nil No. of Indirect Reports: Nil Key Purpose of the Job : The Product Development Engineer is responsible for designing new parts, subsystems and products. This includes research and development, design, improvement, problem solving, testing activities. Coordinating for concept development, feasibility studies, design validation and proto manufacturing activities is critical to the role holder. Educational Qualification / Experience required : - Graduate in Engineering
- Experience of 3 to 6 years in design of industrial part / component / system
- Should have proficiency in using drafting / CAD, other design and analysis tools
- Should possess basic knowledge of product design and development engineering
- Should also have basic knowledge of materials sciences Key Responsibilities : 1. Prepare plan and schedule for product design and development activities including projects at various stages and across variants
- Responsible for designing and developing components subsystems and compressor packages as per project plan and Elgi Product Development Process (EPDP)
- Coordinate for design validation with the respective expert functions across Elgi
- Provide technical inputs and support on design and development concepts for procurement and other development processes
- Execute redesign and engineering activities, special projects as per business requirements Task Analysis: Indicative Tasks 1. Prepare plan and schedule for product design and development activities including projects at various stages and across variants Collect inputs on project proposal and plan from Business Development (BD) (for example, inputs from Voice of Customers (VOC), new project proposals) Study and analyze project proposal for design and development feasibility Work along with project leads to develop detailed product development application objectives Prepare concept document / drawing / 3 D model as appropriate based on project proposals Collaborate with BD for validating project concept, make changes as appropriate to document / drawing based on inputs from BD 2. Responsible for designing and developing components subsystems and compressor packages as per project plan and Elgi Product Development Process (EPDP) Collate and document project proposal, plan and concept drawings / documents for approvals at various stages and from stakeholders Ensure adherence to Elgi product development principles, systems and guidelines including Elgi Product Development Process (EPDP) Create and maintain part designs and drawings using design tools including SolidWorks, AutoCad, Pro E, and others Apply knowledge of best design practices, industry standards and governing body regulations during design process Employ Design for Manufacturing / Design for Assembly / Design for Service (DFM / DFA / DFS) concepts during design process Ensure product development quality by adhering to First Time Right (FTR) principle and error free designs while developing designs Review and analyze design to ensure feasibility of product concept, make changes as appropriate Prepare reports on status of project tasks and milestones for each project handled Conduct design review meetings with superior to ensure product development meets design control requirements Prepare detailed product specifications / design requirements and process flow maps Conduct manufacturing feasibility study as per formats, update drawings as appropriate 3. Coordinate for design validation with the respective expert functions across Elgi Forward design and specifications to Subsystems & Experts team for simulation testing (for example, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Finite Element Analysis, etc) Incorporate changes recommended by expert functions (for example, E&E, SS&E) into the design, as appropriate Coordinate for testing and validation of products and its applications, make improvements / changes to design based on results Finalize the design in collaboration with functional stakeholders Handover final drawings, design and specifications to New Product Productionisation Organization (NPPO) team for proto manufacturing of product Provide for adjustments / changes to drawings as appropriate based on feedback from NPPO assembling / manufacturing / machining processes Assist in assembly of prototype products and validate the product concept 4. Provide technical inputs and support on design and development concepts for procurement and other development processes Prepare engineering documentation, Bills of Material (BOMs), parts lists, engineering specifications, and other supporting documents and forms Coordinate with respective function for requirements in the system for parts, materials required for production of new product Provide inputs / clarifications on design to suppliers for raw materials, machine parts, components Ensure requirements are correctly communicated to supplier, follow up for any further issues / manufacturing difficulties / deviation requests in parts / components Calculate materials costs, modify design, requirements for cost optimization Conduct meetings, prepare technical and status reports as required for internal distribution and external communication Scale up production process via plant trials, make changes to raw materials or components and process parameters to ensure quality is maintained Implement process controls and test methods to assess the production process Deliver products that meets Elgi's standards and also international standards and regulations, as appropriate 5. Execute redesign and engineering activities, special projects as per business requirements Provide for changes / revisions in design and other Engineering Change Requests (ECR), as necessary (for example, correction of design error that isn't evident until testing and modeling, change in material or manufacturing method) Conduct special processes as per project definition and scope and also business requirements (for example, developing new pattern for foundry projects and others) Benchmark against competitor products and evaluate design competitiveness (for example, materials evaluation, component weight, cost benchmarking) Conduct improvement studies on new machines (for example, noise reduction, package size reduction) Conduct analysis and studies for cost reduction activities (for example, investigate alternative materials or new machinery to improve efficiency, quality) Evaluate existing processes to identify areas for improvement
