Opportunity
Consumer Messaging in the Patient Experience division is responsible for building and supporting athenahealth's patient messaging infrastructure that delivers millions of important email, SMS, phone, and push notification messages every day to patients. Our technology is implemented with a mix of technologies with most development occurring in modern Java and AWS microservice-based architecture. We have an opportunity for a talented and experienced backend developer to join our Engineering team as a Member Technical Staff MTS.
Position Summary
As a developer with relevant experience in backend technologies for API development and microservice architecture, you will be working closely with Senior Developers, Architects/Leads, Product Owners, and other technical teams. Your primary responsibility will be to build and maintain the complete software development process from conception to deployment in adherence with the set policies on Security, performance, and testing.

Job Responsibilities
Technical Execution
- Produce accurate, unambiguous, and readable code adhering to technical design specifications.
- Deliver customer value in the form of high-quality software components and services in adherence with policies on Security, performance, longevity, and Integration testing
- Estimate the size of development tasks in story points with the goal of 80% accuracy; begin to challenge others during estimation
- Write, debug, and deploy code to production; deliver timely fixes
- Adhere to DOD (story definition of done) as part of the sprint, including unit tests, functional testing, code reviews, no regressions, bug fixes, documentation and adhere to coding, design, and architecture best practices
- Perform peer code reviews to ensure quality standards
Contributions to the Team
- Master the domain knowledge for area of assignment
- Take ownership of what the team builds after the release
- Volunteer for work in the backlog and commit to quality delivery; Coordinate efforts across the team to ensure completion and effectiveness of one's deliverables
- Participate and contribute to scrum meetings i.e., daily stand-up, sprint planning, and retrospectives
- Drive self-organization; help determine how the team functions in collaboration with your peers
Cross functional Coordination and Communication
- Work collaboratively across the Technology and Product organizations to ensure alignment towards business goals
- Build strong relationships with cross-functional team members
- Share business and technical learnings with the broader engineering and product organization, while adapting approach for different audiences
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent
- 2-4 years of experience in an engineering role
- Strong understanding of data structures and OOPS concepts
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of modern programming languages such as: Java, Spring, Hibernate, RESTful API
- Ability and willingness to explore legacy and monolith systems.
- Ability to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to write code that is technically sound, performant, scalable, and readable
- Ability to work collaboratively on a cross-functional team with a wide range of experience levels
- Availability to occasionally work after-hours on prod support issues or collaborate with USA-based colleagues
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in an Agile environment
- Knowledge of Unix/Linux, SQL, and various other DB technologies
- Knowledge of microservices architecture, messaging system (RabbitMQ /Kafka), docker
- Experience with deploying and maintaining services in public cloud like AWS
- Ability to make decisions independently, driving towards the right solution
