IDS (part of the larger TR legal editorial team in the UK) publishes a monthly employment law journal (IDS Brief) and large commentary textbooks (IDS Handbooks) for publication in both print and online on Westlaw. In this role, you will be responsible for proofreading/sub-editing all copy for IDS print and online UK employment law content before publication to ensure that it is clear, correct and concise, and is consistent with the IDS house style and tone.
About the Role:
- Sub-edit/proof all draft content for IDS Brief monthly journal and Handbook commentary texts to ensure consistency and high standards of grammatical accuracy and clarity, paying close attention to the IDS house style guidance.
- Check accuracy of all cross-references, running headers, legislative references, case law names/ law report citations, quotes from cases and legislation, and page numbering.
- Check all headings and sub-headings are in correct style.
- Format versions of current Handbook chapters by downloading from Westlaw and using this to create an editable version in MS Word. This will involve applying heading and sub-heading styles correctly and checking that all pre-existing bold and italic text is accurately marked-up.
- Work closely with the IDS senior editors, make suggestions for layout improvements for print copy (such as closing gaps and balancing text) and other textual changes to enhance clarity, succinctness, structure and flow.
- Help create the journal contents page and cover of each monthly issue, compile case list for Handbook chapters and check accuracy of Handbook subject indexes.
- After gaining substantial experience, you will help create and update the IDS house style guidance as and when appropriate, and assist in the training of new members of the IDS team on these matters.
- Members of our team prioritize their own work and understand the roles and responsibilities of each collaborator/team member and how each role impacts production. You will also be required to demonstrate competence on company-specific systems necessary to perform your job functions.
About You:
- Good quality degree (i.e. a 2:1 or higher in the UK or equivalent) gained from a university or college located in the UK, USA or other country where English is the first language.
- Proven substantial experience (two years or more) of working within a publishing environment or other relevant employment in a role requiring proofing/sub-editing of legal or other complex material as a significant feature of the job.
- Ability to provide superb attention to detail.
- Proficient user of Microsoft Office applications, ability to search and manage online resources, and strong computer skills generally.
- Proficiency in use of a content management system.
- Ability to meet deadlines: excellent time management and ability to organize/prioritise own workload essential.
- Good team working skills: must be able to work well and communicate effectively within a small team environment.
- (Desirable) Experience of using Westlaw UK to look up cases, legislation and commentary.
