Job Description
CPP Investments has an opening for a Lawyer in our Mumbai office. The individual will be responsible for providing legal advice and support for CPP Investments fast-growing investment and enterprise activities in India and select enterprise activities globally. Reporting to a Managing Director, Legal (located in our Hong Kong office), the successful and exceptional candidate will join our top caliber Legal Department and a dynamic global team of legal and compliance professionals who engage directly with senior leadership and business units in providing advice and support to enable the business and navigate and comply with legal and regulatory requirements consistent with our Guiding Principles. This role provides an excellent opportunity to work on a broad range of complex, leading edge, and high-profile transactions and novel enterprise matters across CPP Investments activities in India and elsewhere. Role-Specific Accountabilities:
Working closely with a Director, Legal in the Mumbai office, partner with deal teams to provide strategic, creative and commercial transaction support and advice across a broad range of investment matters in India
Engage with deal teams and external counsel on complex deal-specific and institutional-level transactional issues
Provide advice and assess legal risk in connection with review and amendment of commercial contracts in the APAC region, and manage and enhance related contractual templates and precedents, working closely and collaboratively with other lawyers and paralegal professionals in the Legal Department and business units across the enterprise
Provide advice and assess risk in connection with review and negotiation of material issues arising on commercial and investment-related non-disclosure agreements, engagement letters and other types of agreements in the APAC region
Provide general corporate support in connection with the operation, governance and maintenance of the Mumbai office, including our Mumbai-based technology and data operations
Provide and support training of investment and enterprise teams and external counsel on institutional, department, group, and deal-specific key considerations
Support development and implementation of enterprise policies, procedures, systems and training to support implementation of advice and risk management
Support and collaborate with Legal department colleagues and other partners across the organization in relation to transaction- and enterprise related matters
Anticipate, identify and assist in managing legal risks relating to new investment strategies and enterprise activities, and new or changed laws or regulations that impact CPP Investments investment and operating strategies
Be a key contributor to Legal Department and CPP Investments-wide initiatives and projects
Generally assist on other legal matters as they arise
Qualifications
LL.B./LL.M/JD or equivalent required
5-8 years of relevant legal experience gained at an in-house corporate legal department and/or major law firm, including meaningful experience in India
Experience in financial services, capital markets and/or a transactional background is an asset
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to work cooperatively with many different stakeholders and ability to manage outside counsel
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple competing projects
Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
Motivated self-started with the ability to work independently with moderate to minimal supervision
Flexibility and adaptability, including off-hours support relating to transactions, international offices and projects
Professional conduct reflecting the quality of work, demeanour, ethical values and high standards of CPP Investments
