Job Description

Position Statement / Purpose:

As a Network Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the organization's network infrastructure to ensure the smooth and secure flow of data and communication. Your role involves working with cross-functional teams to analyse network requirements, configure network devices, troubleshoot issues, and optimize network performance. You will play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability, scalability, and security of the organization's network infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities (Job Description):

Your key responsibilities are,

  1. Network Design and Implementation: Design and implement the organization's local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and other network segments according to business requirements and best practices.

  1. Network Device Configuration: Configure and manage network devices, including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and wireless access points, to support efficient data transmission and secure network communication.

  1. Network Monitoring and Optimization: Monitor network performance, identify potential bottlenecks or performance issues, and proactively optimize the network to ensure maximum efficiency and reliability.

  1. Network Security: Implement and maintain network security measures, such as firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and VPNs, to protect the network from unauthorized access and cyber threats.

  1. Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution: Diagnose and resolve network-related issues, including connectivity problems, network outages, and performance degradation, in a timely manner to minimize downtime and disruptions.

  1. Network Documentation: Create and maintain comprehensive network documentation, including network diagrams, configurations, and standard operating procedures.

  1. Network Upgrades and Migrations: Plan and execute network infrastructure upgrades and migrations, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations.

  1. Network Performance Analysis: Analyse network traffic patterns and trends to identify opportunities for improvement and capacity planning.

  1. Network Policy and Compliance: Ensure that the organization's network infrastructure adheres to security policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

  1. Vendor Management: Interact with network equipment vendors and service providers to procure network hardware, software, and services as needed.

  1. Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as IT, security, and application development, to support their network-related needs and projects.

Key Performance Measures and KPIs

  • Network Incident Resolution Time: Target: <1 hour
  • Measurement: Average time taken by the specialist to resolve network incidents reported by users or monitoring systems.

  • Network Availability: Target: >99.9%
  • Measurement: Percentage of time the network is operational and available to users without interruptions or downtime.

  • Network Security Compliance: Target: >95%
  • Measurement: Percentage of network devices and configurations compliant with security policies and industry standards.

  • First-Time Fix Rate (FTFR): Target: >90%
  • Measurement: Percentage of network issues resolved by the specialist during the initial support interaction without escalations or rework.

  • Network Performance Optimization: Target: <5% packet loss, <50 ms latency
  • Measurement: Metrics like packet loss and latency to indicate network responsiveness and performance.

  • Network Change Success Rate: Target: >95%
  • Measurement: Percentage of successful network changes implemented by the specialist without causing disruptions or negative impacts.

  • Network Documentation Accuracy: Target: >95%
  • Measurement: Percentage of accuracy and completeness in network documentation, including diagrams, configurations, and procedures.

  • Customer Satisfaction (CSAT) Score: Target: >4.5 out of 5
  • Measurement: Average score from customer satisfaction surveys or feedback related to network support provided by the specialist.

  • Network Troubleshooting Efficiency: Target: <30 minutes per incident
  • Measurement: Average time taken by the specialist to troubleshoot and diagnose network issues.

  • Network Device Health: Target: >95% device health
  • Measurement: Percentage of network devices in good health, monitored for proper functioning.

  • Network Capacity Planning: Target: >80% utilization threshold
  • Measurement: Percentage of network capacity utilization, aiming to keep it below a specified threshold.

  • Training and Development: Target: >20 hours per year
  • Measurement: Number of training hours attended by the specialist to enhance their skills and knowledge.

  • Network Downtime: Target: <1 hour per quarter
  • Measurement: Total hours of network downtime experienced within a specified period.

  • Network Technology Upgrades: Target: >75% adoption rate
  • Measurement: Percentage of successful network technology upgrades implemented by the specialist.

  • Vendor Relationship Management: Target: >90% satisfaction
  • Measurement: Vendor satisfaction surveys or feedback related to interactions with network equipment vendors.
