The Indirect Tax Researcher is primarily responsible for the research, analysis, and management of rate and boundary data used to automate the insanely complex world of tax compliance. The successful candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Candidate must be detail-oriented and proficient at balancing multiple priorities/issues. They must be able to communicate clearly and professionally in written, verbal, and electronic formats. Candidate must have a relevant background in tax and/or GIS. Candidate must also understand basic math and accounting concepts.
- Research tax rates and boundaries, reporting, and remittance requirements to keep our tax products in compliance with state, county, and local jurisdiction tax requirements.
- Monitor legislation, administrative decisions, and judicial decisions for changes in transaction tax rate and boundary content in assigned jurisdiction.
- Structure rate and boundary changes into machine-readable data while providing concise and accurate documentation of the the changes.
- Test the data to validate accuracy before deployment to production.
- Build productive working relationships with state, county, and city authorities to maximize the quality of our product.
- When opportunities to further automate and streamline processes exist, raise them to Manager to enable prioritization and ticket creation for Engineering.
What You'll Need to be Successful
Qualifications (absolute Must Haves Walking In The Door)
- A natural curiosity about technology and an interest in innovation and learning about new areas of transaction taxes
- Relevant Bachelor's degree (i.e. Geography with emphasis in GIS Systems)
- Minimum of 5 years experience in a related field if holding a relevant Bachelor's degree OR 3 years experience in related field if holding a GIS related Master's degree
- Experience with ESRI ArcGIS application or other open GIS applications
- Excellent research skills, including a logical and creative approach to drilling down to specific data to surface information that is vital to the accuracy of the published content
- Effective communication skills (verbal and written)
- Ability to work in and support a team environment through collective team topics, load balancing, and sharing/receiving constructive feedback
- Ability to multi-task, troubleshoot, and problem solve in a calm, analytical and methodical manner that also demonstrates a sense of urgency
- Proactively participate in a dynamic and innovative tax environment by maintaining a high level of energy while being consistently dependable, efficient, and accurate
- Demonstrated ability to manage time to achieve priority results
- Ability to maintain organization and attention to detail
- Analytic ability at a level sufficient to understand and resolve client requests and tax concerns
- Ability to apply basic math, percentages and general accounting rules
- Ability to learn and adapt to different software applications and tools
- Demonstrated high standards of excellence in work product and professionalism
Preferred Qualifications (great To Have But Not Absolutely Necessary)
- GIS related Masters Degree
- Indirect tax, research, consulting or audit experience
- Familiarity with tax returns and/or government compliance
- Familiarity with Atlassian Confluence and/or JIRA
- Familiarity with concepts of taxation and how they apply to jurisdiction rates and boundaries

The Avatax Rates and Boundaries team creates and manages rate and location content, which is utilized across Avalara Products. This team is continuously learning how geospatial data can automate global tax compliance at scale.
The team comprises tax professionals across different locations both within India and the United States.
