Role and Responsibilitiesof Head of School
HoS of a School is the Chief Academic and Administrative Officer of the concerned School and serves as a key member of the University Leadership Team. The School's Staff member shall report directly to the HoS. Representing the School within the University and among a wide range of external constituencies, HoS promotes highly acclaimed Access and Excellence Mission, Strengthens collaboration with community partners, and fosters excellence in Education and Research.
Functional
The responsibility of the HoS is to maintain the proper teaching activity.
The consolidation of existing courses as per the need and introduction/deletion of courses in various departments under his/her School.
He/She has to ensure the maintenance of discipline/proper functioning of school members and smooth running of classes.
HoS has also to provide the required facilities in terms of books and other academic needs to the department.
He/She has to maintain the proper interaction with different governing bodies of the University and organizing of BoS/DRC as per their schedule, in addition to these the HoS has to also act as follows:
Curricular Aspects
To support curriculum development & the initiation and introduce new programs in line with the University's overall programming objectives.
To ensure proper Academic Planning & Academic Audit of the programmes and implementation of academic policies approved by the Academic Council.
To coordinate and promote Academic proposal, changes, reviews, and other academic matters.
Teaching-Learning and Evaluation
To promote the culture of outstanding interdisciplinary education, research and innovation.
To ensure high standards of teaching, methods of evaluating teaching effectiveness.
To ensure appropriate actions, as are needed for maintenance of quality of teaching spelt out by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell.
To disseminate the information on the various quality parameters of higher education, as may be defined by various national level bodies dealing with assessment and accreditation of quality in educational institutions.
To enquire into any malpractices committed in any academic programmes in the School by a university department, on being directed by the Academic Council and submit a report of the findings to the Academic Council.
Research, Innovations and Extension
To encourage research and innovation within the School.
HoS shall facilitate to ensure healthy environment for quality research paper publication, Quality projects, Consultancy projects, Patent filing & publication.
To maintain links between other schools and with the Deans/Director of IQAC & Research and Development. The HoS shall also establish and maintain links with other institutions and academic bodies, both provincial and national.
To guide HODs to organize inter-institutional and intra-institutional workshops, seminars on quality related themes and promotion of quality circles.
Infrastructure and Learning Resources
To ensure availability of sufficient infrastructure for development and application of quality benchmarks or parameters for various academic and administrative activities of higher education.
To ensure introduction of preferred learning management system, availability of latest equipment/software in Labs, online journals subscription, for development of quality culture in higher education with consultation.
To guide/felicitate Faculty members to prepare the annual budget in consultation for the financial year for procurement of equipment, machinery, instrument, computer, software, etc.
To monitor the infrastructure/laboratories and utilization of equipment therein.
Admissions
To create the annual admission plan for the courses offered in the School.
To administer and manage the entire admission process for courses offered in the School to ensure the complete filling of seats.
To carry out all activities for branding for the courses offered by the School.
To prepare the plan for the growth of the Faculty in terms of increased number of students in existing courses and offering courses based on the needs of the society.
Student Support and Progression
To recommend to the Management Council proposals for the institution of fellowship, travelling fellowship, scholarship, studentship, medals and prizes and making Regulations for their award.
To cultivate and develop relationship with Alumni and Industry partner
To develop a system for creation of a repository of questions (Question Bank) with model answers which shall be continuously updated and expanded.
To render necessary assistance for redressal of grievances of the students in the faculty.
To prepare proposals for award of fellowship, scholarship.
To encourage for conducting & organizing the research, seminar, and industrial interactions for the students.
Governance, Leadership and Management
The HoS's position is a highly responsible one, requiring full-time attention.
He/She shall work directly under the superintendence, direction and control of the Vice-Chancellor or any other senior officers of the University appointed by him. Nevertheless, HoS should maintain contact with their discipline during the term of office.
To exercise such other powers and perform such other duties as prescribed by or under University act or assigned to him by the Vice-Chancellor or Pro-Vice- Chancellor from time to time.
To develop a system for recommendations for the nomination, retention, promotion, tenure and compensation of Staff.
To ensure academic development of the faculty under her/his purview and proper implementation of the decisions of the Board of Studies, Faculty, Academic Council, Management Council and the Board of Examinations and Evaluation in respect of faculty.
To device a mechanism for timely preparation of reports as required by the various authorities or bodies of the university, the State Government, the Central Government, the Central Educational Commissions or Councils, Commission and any such other body.
To ensure appropriate managing and monitoring of Faculty budgets, allocate and provide oversight of Department budgets and Program fees.
To ensure and facilitate the fee collection of students and monitoring their credit control.
Institutional Values and Best Practices
Oversee the entire student life cycle and ensure efficient operations of the same.
To prepare/analyze Annual Quality Assurance Report of programmes within her/his faculty, based on the quality parameters or assessment criteria, developed by the relevant quality assurance bodies, in the prescribed format.
To serve on other University Committees as required and shall report to the official bodies of the University and to University administrative officers on academic and administrative developments relating to the Faculty.
Miscellaneous
To carry out such other duties as may be assigned by University bodies, or any competent authority/senior functionary(ies) of the University.
Ensure that the students get an excellent learning experience and become brand ambassadors of the University.
