About the Role:
Exide Energy Solutions is looking for a Mechanical Design Head to lead the mechanical engineering design efforts for our lithium-ion battery packs. This role will focus on transforming customer requirements into robust, cost-effective battery designs while ensuring compliance with industry standards. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in mechanical design for automotive or energy storage applications, with a strong foundation in team leadership, system integration, and innovation in new technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Product Design & Technical Specifications: Define product specifications and technical parameters based on customer requirements, and oversee concept reviews and approvals.
- Final Design & Documentation: Conduct detailed reviews of drawings, engineering calculations, digital mock-ups, and ensure final BOM aligns with cost targets.
- Performance Requirements & Validation: Define performance requirements, prepare design verification and validation plans, and develop test protocols.
- Design Reviews & Cross-functional Collaboration: Lead design reviews with R&D, production, QA, and other teams, ensuring alignment across all functions.
- Value Engineering & Knowledge Transfer: Drive value engineering initiatives, ensure continuous improvement, and integrate past project learnings into new designs.
- Testing, Validation, & Reporting: Oversee simulation, testing, and validation, including review of reports to ensure products meet quality and performance standards.
- Product Features & Performance Alignment: Collaborate with the Business Unit (BU) to finalize product features and performance standards.
- New Technology Implementation: Lead the adoption of new mechanical technologies to enhance product innovation.
Mandatory Skills:
- Automotive Standards Knowledge: Extensive familiarity with international automotive standards.
- System Integration Expertise: Strong experience in integration processes, including electronics, wiring harnesses, and Battery Management Systems (BMS).
- DFM/DFA & Safety Knowledge: Deep knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and safety principles.
- Thermal Management Skills: Expertise in thermal management, including cooling jacket design, coolant flow calculations, heat exchangers, and heat sinks.
- Material Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of materials like metals, alloys, sealants, gaskets, polymers, and rubbers.
- Process Knowledge: Familiar with PDP, APQP, DFMEA, ECM, DFSS, DVP, and PVP processes.
- Component Selection Expertise: Skilled in material and grade selection for sheet metal, aluminum, and plastic components.
- Team Leadership: Experience leading a team of at least four engineers.
- CAD Proficiency: Proficient in SolidWorks, Catia, or UG Nx; SolidWorks preferred.
- Value Analysis and Value Engineering (VAVE): Proven experience in VAVE approaches.
- Problem-Solving & RCA: Strong problem-solving abilities with experience in root cause analysis, production line, and quality issue management.
- Electrical Knowledge: Familiarity with AC/DC, voltage/current principles, and series/parallel connections.
