Overview
The Functional Safety Engineer plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and reliability of products, specifically within the automotive industry. This role involves developing and implementing safety processes and standards to minimize risks and ensure compliance with industry regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducting safety assessments and analyses to identify potential hazards and risks
- Developing safety requirements and ensuring their implementation throughout the product development lifecycle
- Performing system and software safety analysis and verification
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate safety-related features into product designs
- Evaluating and enhancing existing safety processes and methodologies
- Participating in safety reviews and audits to ensure regulatory compliance
- Creating safety documentation and reports for internal and external stakeholders
- Providing expertise and guidance on safety standards and best practices
- Supporting project management activities related to functional safety
- Leading safety training and awareness programs for project teams
Competence Requirements
Vehicle motion control experience (Brakes and Steering)
- Previous experiences working with FuSA, FMEA and Cyber security on a practical level (delivering work products and verification plans)
- Control Theory
System safety management
- Identify gaps in the documentation that exists
- Write requirements to fill those gaps or Communicate with external partners to fill those gaps
- Create a test plan to cover all levels of system safety verification
- Communicate timeplan to supplier to ensure requirements are implemented and verified
- Cybersecurity
- Manage and review cybersecurity work products
- Communicate timeplan with supplier to ensure mitigations are implemented
- FMEA
- Review FMEA documents from external partners to ensure completeness
- Create FMEA work products if gaps are identified
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience in functional safety engineering within the automotive industry
- Strong knowledge of safety standards such as ISO 26262
- Proficiency in risk assessment methodologies and tools
- Experience in conducting fault analysis and implementing safety measures
- Familiarity with software tools for safety analysis and verification
- Good understanding of system architecture and safety mechanisms
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Project management experience in a safety-critical environment
- Ability to interpret and apply complex safety requirements
- Certification in functional safety (e.g., FS Engineer) is a plus
- Analytical thinking and attention to detail
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
- Up-to-date knowledge of industry trends and developments in functional safety
- Problem-solving skills and a proactive mindset
