Position Summary
The Environmental Engineer ensures compliance for US solar projects by conducting assessments, securing permits, and coordinating with regulatory agencies. With a focus on protecting local ecosystems, this role combines fieldwork and regulatory expertise to support sustainable project development.
Core Responsibilities
- Environmental Assessments and Analysis
- Conduct market research to complete desktop-based Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports, prepare permitting applications, and compile Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) and biological reports for proposed solar, BESS, Wind projects.
- Evaluate site characteristics, potential impacts on local ecosystems, and compliance with environmental regulations.
- Identify and recommend mitigation strategies to minimize environmental disruption and enhance site compatibility.
- Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and county-level environmental regulations, including the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and other relevant local and state policies.
- Collaborate with legal teams to interpret regulatory requirements and advise project teams on adherence to environmental standards.
- Prepare permit applications, environmental reports, and documentation for submission to regulatory bodies.
- Stakeholder Coordination
- Act as a liaison with local authorities, regulatory agencies, and community stakeholders to address environmental concerns and requirements.
- Organize public information sessions or community outreach programs as needed to communicate project impacts and mitigation measures.
- Field Studies and Data Collection
- Conduct or coordinate site visits to collect data on water quality, soil conditions, wildlife habitats, and plant species.
- Monitor environmental conditions during construction and operation phases to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Coordinate with field biologists, soil scientists, and environmental consultants for specialized assessments.
- Reporting and Documentation
- Prepare environmental reports, impact statements, and documentation for internal stakeholders and regulatory agencies.
- Maintain organized records of all environmental data, permits, and compliance documentation for each project.
- Track environmental performance metrics and provide updates on compliance and project impacts.
Education Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, Environmental Science, or related field (master's preferred).
Technical Skills and Experience
Software Proficiency:
Project Management:
- Experience in managing design projects from conception to implementation
- Ability to coordinate with other engineers and stakeholders
Renewable Energy Systems:
- Strong knowledge of US environmental laws and regulations, including federal and state-specific requirements.
- Experience working with regulatory agencies and county authorities.
- Proficiency in environmental modelling software, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and data analysis tools.
Experience
- 3+ years of experience in environmental compliance or environmental engineering, ideally within the renewable energy or solar industry.
Psychosocial Skills /Human Skills/Behavioural Skills
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with environmental aspects of solar or renewable energy projects.
- Familiarity with sustainable design and LEED certifications.
- Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to take ideas and run with them from concept to conclusion.
- Exceptional verbal and writing communication skills with superiors, peers, partners, and other stakeholders.
- Excellent interpersonal skills while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment.
- Excellence in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
