Australian Research Centre For Cancer Survivorship


As a result of a 10-year partnership between UNSW and Cancer Council NSW (CC NSW), the Australian Research Centre for Cancer Survivorship is a recently announced initiative which seeks to provide the evidence base for models of care with a person-centred approach, will inform services and policy in the survivorship space across NSW and will act as a model for other Australian states and territories as well as internationally. The Centre will leverage existing expertise and build new capacity, with which to drive excellence in research, education and advocacy. It will partner with consumers, Primary Health Networks, Local Health Districts, other healthcare providers, Government, Universities, and industry to develop, test and implement and evaluate ambitious solutions which address critical issues for cancer survivors.

Why This Opportunity Matters

The Director will be the pivotal role in establishing/setting up and delivering on the ambitions of the partnership. This will include responsibility for developing, embedding, communicating, measuring and achieving the Centre's academic and operational vision, strategies and goals, in overall alignment with the Faculty's Health 25 Strategy and UNSW's vision and strategy . In addition, the Director will be responsible for obtaining long-term research funding for the research centre above and beyond the initial 10-year period of funding. The Director will provide strong academic leadership and foster excellence in research, innovative teaching, and engagement activities.

The role will work closely with academic and research staff in health systems and services, building research capacity and strengthening collaborations within the faculty and across partners and stakeholders, to translate improved health outcomes for Australians including building the profile of the Centre.

The role will report to the Dean of Medicine, but the director is accountable to the Joint UNSW/CC NSW Steering Committee for the performance of the centre.

The Successful Appointee Will Have

  • Doctoral qualification with demonstrated outstanding and extensive experience in health administration or leadership at a senior level, a clinical background would be advantageous.
  • Demonstrated extensive experience in leading or overseeing large complex projects around the design, delivery and/or evaluation of health services with a deep understanding of the Australian healthcare landscape.
  • Distinguished track record in cancer survivorship research.
  • Proven ability to apply advanced analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills in a complex multi-stakeholder operating environment.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and collaboration skills with a proven ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven extensive leadership in developing significant productive relationships and engagement with external stakeholders, in particular industry, Government and the community.
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead by example in supporting equal opportunity and equity, diversity and inclusion policy and programs as they relate to staff and students.
