This role will undertake overall responsibility for maintaining high standards of subbing in the team. The role will be responsible for delivering the Indian languages output in English for global audience including editorial control, reporting, selection and compilation of material, production, and implementing effective use of resources.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

  • Responsible for checking and editing stories for facts and language, writing headlines and sub-headlines, within set deadlines and in conformity with journalistic ethics, editorial objectives and house style for global audience.
  • Subbing and re-writing stories by staff reporters or freelancers after due discussions with stakeholders
  • Writing copy from scratch with inputs from reporters and other credible sources when required for global audience
  • Collaborating with various editors and stakeholders to shape up stories in a way that is in line with the BBC guidelines
  • Responsible for producing stories, working along with reporters, which includes writing, scripting, editing, across a range of BBC output.
  • Think and work on making stories more interesting and accessible to BBC target audiences such as women and underserved audiences.
  • Deliver journalism of the highest standard and within the required timeframe using available resources.
  • Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards and tailoring it for wider BBC use.
  • Provide regular advice on news developments, guidance on agency or newspaper stories and briefings on government policies.
  • At all times to carry out duties in accordance with the BBC health and safety policy.
  • To lead on relevant projects and initiatives as required.

Knowledge, skills, training and experience

  • Fluent in written and spoken English, English typing.
  • Flair for writing for local stories for global audience, with proper context.
  • A high standard of editorial judgment, subbing ability, writing ability and production skills based on substantial experience of editing news stories, features and text & video scripting.
  • Ability to write creatively in an engaging manner, adapt, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media suitable for multimedia output.
  • Substantial experience of editing news stories, features, analysis and video scripts, Up to date with current affairs, deep knowledge or interest in some news-relevant fields.
  • Good communication skills, team player, multitasking and able to prioritize the work.

Qualification & experience:

  • Should have excellent writing, typing and editing skills in English and read and understand Hindi scripts.
  • Must have good knowledge of web essentials such as SEO, keywords, hyperlinks, headlines, image driven content
  • Ability to work within tight deadlines
  • Must be willing to work in shifts as per requirement
  • Relevant experience of five years.
