Job Description
The Automation Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, commissioning, testing and implementing automation systems to support manufacturing. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to identify the scope of work for automation needs and look into areas for improvement, conducting feasibility studies and overseeing the installation and maintenance of automation equipment/machines. The Automation Engineer works closely with plant manufacturing teams to ensure efficient and cost-effective solutions are provided to manufacturing operations.
Key responsibilities
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to identify automation needs and develop solutions.
- Define the scope of work on automation needs for manufacturing plants and design the topology of the automation systems which are needed to carry out automated tasks.
- Design and plan electrical systems, including power, communications, and data. Design systems using Gantry, Robotics, Vision System, Sensor technologies and other new technologies which are used in Industrial automation.
- Designing and implementing industrial automation systems to improve efficiency and productivity.
- Lead and complete the architectural design overview for team review for inputs. Define/develop system solutions that automate equipment, processes, and network. Lead the qualification FAT and SAT and develop proper handover to production team.
- Developing automation solutions (machines/equipment's) with approved vendors that coordinates, directs, and controls the functions of other equipment or production processes.
- Advanced analytical abilities, computer programming knowledge, and the ability to work with robots and automated systems.
- Maintain systems for installation, integration, operation and upgrade control systems.
- Use engineering design software to create, modify, and analyze project schematics. Lead both hardware and software automation and develop solutions with new technologies used in automation.
- Establish equipment specifications and requirements. Develop appropriate documentation including safety measures. Lead certification requirements and coordinate with agencies responsible for certification accreditation.
- Establish preventive maintenance and repairs documentation along with the tools required to maintain the automation machines/equipment's. Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 spare part management establishments.
- Design and implement data communication protocols. Learn, develop, implement and train best practices in organization.
- Training stakeholders on how to troubleshoot automation systems
- Conducting feasibility studies and cost-benefit analyses for automation projects.
- Monitoring and analyzing data from automation systems to identify areas for improvement and optimize performance.
- Staying updated with the latest advancements in industrial automation technology and recommending innovative solutions to enhance operations.
- In charge of designing, testing, and optimizing automated systems in various mechanical and digital environments to help businesses improve processes, save costs, and achieve better outcomes.
Automation Engineer requirements and qualifications
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in electrical/Electronic engineering, Mechanical engineering.
- 5-7 years of experience in electronics/electrical, mechanical, or control system design. Should have hands on experience in automation machine manufacturing from design to qualification. Knowledge of automation machines is a must.
- Experience in understanding and reading design-hardware/software, application hardware and software, control systems, automation technologies.
- Experience in automation solutions modelling and generating solutions concepts with Gantry, Robotics, Vision systems, control systems etc.
- Experience with PLC, DCS and SCADA systems. Knowledge of PLC and DCS programming.
- Experience with robotics, AI and machine learning. Comprehensive understanding of computer programming and software development.
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment and perform complex system tests.
- Experience in developing machines with vendors/inhouse, testing, taking through qualification FAT/SAT and certifications.
- Developing training plans for handover to production with 4M (Man/Machine/Method/Material) approach.
- Strong leadership and problem-solving skills, organizational, Creative thinking skills, Excellent verbal and written communication skills, analytical skills.
- Ability to communicate well with other members of the Design, Development and Production teams
- Ability to keep up with the latest technologies.
