Overview A junior accountant role is an opportunity to gain on the job training and use that knowledge to develop and grow their skill set. A Junior account should ideally demonstrate good hunger for growth and have the right aptitude to learn new skills. Junior Accountants are valuable to the organisation because of their future potential, as they grow and develop their skill, knowledge and productivity. Education Chartered Accountant Work Experience May have some work experience (0 - 1 years) gained post Chartered Accountancy. Areas Requirement + Focuses on delivering high quality work with minimal errors. Quality of work Technical Expertise A junior accountant will be working towards develop their skill and knowledge in each of the areas below: + Business Activity Statements (BAS) print the required reports from the clients accounting software and enter the details onto the BAS form. + Instalment Activity Statements (IAS) print the required reports from the clients accounting software and enter the details onto the IAS form. + GST Reconciliation print monthly/quarterly GST reports from the relevant accounting software and reconcile to Business Activity Statements lodged (with assistance as required). + Preparation and reconciliation of cash receipts and payment summaries + Accurately compiles client source documentation for processing (including bank reconciliations). + Complete bank reconciliations. + Post trial balance/cashbook movements by coding the transactions to the appropriate accounts. Identify the need for a new account to be added to the client chart, modify client chart and post journals in accounting software. + Trade debtors obtain and review aged debtors schedule from accounting software. Identify potential bad debts. Complete journal entry to post into accounting software. Ensure the balance reconciles to the general ledger. + Inventory - process the closing stock entries. + Fixed assets identify capital acquisitions, add acquisitions to the asset register using the appropriate depreciation rate, identify asset disposals and reflect disposal using correct consideration. + Prepayments/Intangibles identify prepaid expenditure, perform amortisation calculations and process required journal entries. + Trade Creditors print and analyse creditors schedule, identify unusually large or old creditors and prepare journal entries to record. + Hire Purchases/Leases understand the difference between a Hire Purchase and a lease contract. Attempt to reconcile movements (with assistance as required). + Prepare activity statements to review stage, able to identify where various items are represented on statements. + Profit and Loss review identify any inconsistencies in the current years figures through the comparative analysis. Enter details into the tax return and complete relevant schedules. + Deductions identify deductions for donations and work related deductions including the various forms of motor vehicle deductions. Other Compliance Work An undergraduate will be working towards develop their skill and knowledge in each of the areas below: + Workers compensation reconcile wages for appropriate period for non-complex declarations, complete workers compensation declaration and standard cover letter. + Land Tax verify the notice of assessment issued by the Office of State Revenue (OSR). Be able to complete the initial and variation returns. + ASIC documentation understands the purpose of company statements and identify when updates are required. + Government agencies Able to liaise with agencies including the ATO, ASIC, OSR to obtain the required information. + Tax administration knowledge of tax administration, including such issues as the imposition of and calculation of penalties and interest.
