Associate Professor in Epidemiology and Social Determinants of Dementia

  • Employment Type: Full-time
  • Duration: 3 year fixed term contract
  • Remuneration: $179,630 - $197,312 + 17% Super and leave loading
  • Location: Kensington, NSW (Hybrid Flexible Working)

About UNSW


The Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA) is a premier research institution at UNSW Sydney, investigating brain ageing. CHeBA was established in October 2012 and headed by internationally acclaimed leaders in the field, Professor Henry Brodaty and Professor Perminder Sachdev. CHeBA is positioned as an international centre of excellence in multidisciplinary research into the ageing brain. Our work extends from molecular work in the genetics and proteomics laboratories, to tissue culture and cell-related work in the Stem Cell Lab, to neuronal systems and networks in the Neuroimaging Lab, to clinical, epidemiological and sociological research, to research on ageing health policy using its strong links with teaching hospitals, aged care providers, state and federal governments and our established ageing cohort studies. Our work strongly emphasises implementation, capacity building and translational research.

Why Your Role Matters

As a Senior Research Fellow/ Associate Professor you will be expected to make major original contributions to the research enterprise of the area of Epidemiology and Social Determinants of Dementia and to play a significant role within your profession or discipline. Academics at this level may be appointed in recognition of marked distinction in their area of their research or scholarship.

The role of Senior Research Fellow, Associate Professor reports to Scientia Professor Perminder Sachdev (Co-director of CHeBA) and has no direct reports.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out original/innovative research, actively contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the epidemiology and prevention of neurocognitive disorders, and social determinants of health in ageing and dementia.
  • While this is research only position, teaching activities are encouraged pertaining to the relevant expertise when they involve enhancing the impact of the Centre and the Discipline.
  • Participate in major research collaborations, especially in relation to the consortia developed by CHeBA, such as the COSMIC consortium.
  • Engage in further research in the global epidemiology of neurocognitive disorders with the aim of preventing such disorders, reducing the global health burden in relation to these disorders, and influencing national and international policies in this regard.
  • Engage in research in the social determinants on ageing and dementia so as to develop strategies for intervention and policy change to reduce their societal impact.

Who You Are


  • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Significant track record in research leadership with outcomes of high quality and high international impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence and deliver research leadership.
  • Demonstrated academic excellence and outstanding contribution to research and scholarship.
  • Demonstrated leadership in building engagement and partnerships with the profession and industry.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
