What You Will Do
As part of the corporate accounting and reporting team, you will ensure completeness, accuracy, and validity of balance sheet and income statement accounts including associated reconciliations, accruals and analysis as assigned. You will report to the Senior Manager, Corporate Accounting, based in North America, coupled with a local team lead resource. You will partner with our Operational, Risk, Commercial, and Finance teams, among others, for month end close including reporting and analysis of monthly and periodic actuals and variances, perform associated balance sheet reconciliations, and assist the Accounting, FP&A, Tax, and Treasury teams in ensuring a timely and accurate closing cycle. You will also own processes as assigned and assist in explanations of variances against historical performance and the budget in coordination with the FP&A team.
You must be a self-starter who can meet deadlines, challenge the status quo while maintaining a silent running state, and ensure the integrity of gross margin results and balance sheet reconciliations. You will collaborate cross-functionally with the Company to deliver results timely, efficiently, and accurately.
What Tasks You Will Perform
- Ensure integrity of accounting information by recording journal entries and verifying/consolidating financial information.
- Partner with accounting personnel to ensure compliance with US GAAP, including preparation of journal entries.
- Prepare and record corporate asset, liability, revenue, and expense entries by compiling and analyzing account information.
- Maintain accurate legal entity general ledger activity by transferring subsidiary accounts, preparing a trial balance, and reconciling entries.
- Prepare monthly working papers and analyze transactions to determine corrective actions or adjustments.
- Ensure assigned asset and liability accounts are reconciled on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis per the Company's Balance Sheet Integrity standards.
- Prepare key expense account analysis and assist FP&A team in documenting variances with detailed business explanations.
- Prepare monthly analytical analyses and examine reasonableness of assigned accounts using trending, scanning, ratio, and other analytical procedures for both balance sheet and income statement accounts with proper relationships.
- Assist with preparing legal entity and consolidated financial statements and supporting schedules for monthly reporting or as needed.
- Respond to inquiries from various departments regarding monthly departmental/regional reports.
- Assist in interim and year-end audit preparations.
- Tie source records to estimates and forecasts provided by other Finance teams, and lead research and explanation of account differences with the Finance and Operations teams.
- Maintain and enhance the design of the corporate reporting processes in collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with Just Energy's control frameworks.
- Coordinate with other teams and external auditors to support information requests and explanations timely.
- Proactively respond to business questions and propose solutions to various levels within the organization up to the Executive Leadership Team as requested.
- Assist cross-functionally within the Finance team as requested.
What Experience We Ask For
We require:- A minimum of 5 years of experience, of which 3 years include practice as a CPA/CA or other professional designation.
- A working knowledge of Excel, including building pivot tables, intermediate formulas, and use of an Enterprise Resource Planning system
- A demonstrated ability to utilize SQL, including writing queries
- A demonstrated understanding of accounting, control, and finance concepts
- An ability to perform detailed journal entries and analysis and research accounts, perform and review reconciliations with limited coaching
- Strong decision making based on quantitative measurements and providing analytical and reasoning capabilities on accounting information
- A bias to listen, challenge, and learn versus assume without evidence
- A self-starter with strong attention to detail and focus on meeting reasonable deadlines, with an ability to multi-task, prioritize issues and propose solutions to the Finance Leadership Team
- The ability to perform work as both an individual contributor and as a leader of a team to ensure all deadlines are met
- We prefer:
- A master's degree in accounting
- Energy experience within a trading environment, and Big 4 audit for financial advisory experience in an Energy practice
- A working knowledge of US GAAP
- A working knowledge of Great Plains
- A higher-level experience in Excel including building VBAs or macros
- Implementation experience of Financial systems/databases and change management abilities while maintaining a silent running function
- An ability to communicate at different levels across functions which may not have a detail understanding of Finance
