Job Description

The AVP-Power Trading will lead the strategic direction, operational performance and drive business growth. S/he will oversee all activities related to the procurement and sale of power for the company. This role involves developing and executing strategies to optimize power purchasing costs, manage supply risks, and maximize revenue through power sales. The individual will lead a team of professionals in managing energy contracts, market analysis, trading activities, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

The incumbent is expected to bring strong leadership, technical expertise with a University Degree in Engineering, preferably with Master's degree in Energy Management, Business, Finance and a proven track record in energy trading, power procurement, or related fields with a strong background in electricity

markets and contracts.

This role requires-

  • Deep understanding of power markets, energy trading platforms, and market regulations.
  • Strong understanding of power trading tools, financial models / instruments used in energy market, and risk management strategies.
  • Familiarity with renewable energy markets and carbon credit trading.
  • Prior experience in power scheduling and a detailed understanding of LDC operations
  • Effective contract management with counterparties like IPPs, Traders, IEX, STU, CTU
  • Familiarity with regulatory bodies and compliance requirements in the energy sector.
  • Knowledge of energy storage systems and their impact on power purchase and sales strategies.
  • Experience with environmental regulations and renewable energy mandates is a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in data analysis and forecasting tools.
  • Strategic thinker with a track record of successful strategy implementation.
  • Excellent negotiation and contract management skills.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities.

This role entails-

Strategic Planning

Develop and implement comprehensive strategies for power purchasing and sales to meet the company's operational and financial objectives.

  • Analyze market trends, forecasts, and regulatory developments to inform decision-making.
  • Evaluate & implement appropriate trading tools & platforms for effective trading function
  • Strategies on transmission requirement and cost optimization

Power Purchase:

  • Develop and implement short-term and long-term power procurement strategies to ensure reliable and cost-effective electricity supply.
  • Lead negotiations with power generators, independent power producers (IPPs), and wholesale market participants to secure favorable power purchase agreements (PPAs).
  • Participate in wholesale energy markets (e.g., day-ahead, real-time, or capacity markets) to purchase electricity at the best possible rates, balancing price and supply risks.
  • Maintain strong relationships with power suppliers, IPPs, and renewable energy providers, ensuring contract performance and compliance.
  • Oversee the integration of renewable energy sources into the power procurement strategy, aligning with sustainability and regulatory goals.

Power Sales:

  • Lead the development of power sales strategies to maximize revenue by selling electricity to retail customers, other utilities, or through wholesale market participation.
  • Analyze market trends, customer demand, pricing mechanisms, and regulatory changes to adjust sales strategies and pricing models.
  • Negotiate and manage contracts with large-scale customers, retail utilities, and commercial or industrial clients for electricity sales.
  • Implement hedging strategies to mitigate price volatility and manage risk associated with market fluctuations, fuel prices, and regulatory changes.

Compliance and Risk Management:

  • Ensure all power purchase and sales activities comply with relevant regulatory frameworks, including state and central regulations (e.g., CERC, SERC), as well as environmental and renewable energy mandates.
  • Stay abreast of regulatory changes affecting power markets and trading activities.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies and participate in industry forums as needed.
  • Monitor and manage risks related to price volatility, credit exposure, supplier performance, and regulatory changes. Implement risk mitigation strategies.
  • Oversee the financial performance of the power purchase and sales department, including budget management, cost control, and revenue forecasting.

Stakeholder Collaboration:

  • Work closely with operations, finance, legal, and sustainability teams to align power procurement and sales strategies with overall business goals.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate smooth operations.

Team Leadership:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of traders, analysts, and contract managers.
  • Foster a culture of high performance, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Set performance targets and conduct regular evaluations.
