Key Responsibilities
Research and Development
- Conduct original, high-quality research in astronomy and astrophysics.
- Develop and maintain an active research program, including securing external funding through grant proposals.
- Publish research findings in reputable, peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences.
- Collaborate with colleagues within and outside the department on interdisciplinary research projects.
Teaching and Mentoring
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in astronomy, astrophysics, and related subjects.
- Develop and update curriculum materials to incorporate the latest scientific developments and pedagogical approaches.
- Supervise and mentor undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students in their academic and research endeavours.
- Provide academic advising to students, including guidance on course selection, degree requirements, and career opportunities.
Technical Skills and Competence
- Utilize and develop astronomical instruments and software for research purposes.
- Apply advanced computational techniques and programming languages (e.g., Python, C++) for data analysis and simulations. Unix/LINUX Operating system, LATEX, etc.
- Stay current with technological advancements and incorporate new tools into research and teaching.
Collaboration and Networking
- Engage in collaborative research projects with other faculty members, institutions, and research organizations.
- Participate in professional organizations, committees, and conferences to stay current with advancements in the field and contribute to the academic community.
Administrative Duties
- Participate in departmental and university committees, contributing to the development and implementation of policies and goals.
- Assist in the recruitment and retention of students and faculty members.
Qualifications
- A Ph.D. in Astronomy, Astrophysics, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated potential for excellence in research, evidenced by a strong publication record and the ability to secure external funding.
- Commitment to excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and students.
