Overview
The Academic Counselor plays a vital role in providing guidance and support to students, helping them navigate their academic journey and make informed decisions about their educational and career paths. This position is crucial in ensuring that students receive the assistance and resources they need to succeed academically and personally.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct one-on-one counseling sessions with students to assess their academic needs and provide personalized guidance and support.
- Assist students in setting academic goals and developing plans to achieve them.
- Provide information and guidance on course selection, major exploration, degree requirements, and academic policies.
- Offer support and resources for students experiencing academic challenges or personal difficulties.
- Coordinate and facilitate workshops and programs on study skills, time management, and academic success strategies.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to identify and address students academic needs and issues.
- Keep accurate records of student interactions and progress, maintaining confidentiality and adhering to privacy regulations.
- Participate in new student orientation and welcome programs to introduce counseling services and resources.
- Stay informed about current trends and developments in higher education and career pathways to better guide students.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of counseling services and resources.
- Participate in professional development activities to enhance counseling skills and knowledge.
- Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of counseling programs and services through data collection and analysis.
- Collaborate with other counselors and staff to create a supportive and inclusive counseling environment.
- Support the overall mission and goals of the academic counseling center and the institution.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in counseling, psychology, education, or a related field.
- Proven experience in academic advising, counseling, or student support services.
- Strong knowledge of academic programs, degree requirements, and educational resources.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to empathetically engage and support students from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to assess students needs, provide guidance, and develop personalized academic plans.
- Understanding of student development and learning theories.
- Proficiency in using counseling software and student information systems for record-keeping and data management.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to support student success.
- Strong organizational and time management skills to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
