Job Description

Overview

An Academic Counselor plays a crucial role in providing guidance and support to students, helping them navigate their academic journey, overcome challenges, and make informed decisions regarding their educational and career paths. The Academic Counselor fosters an environment of trust, empathy, and understanding, serving as a mentor and advisor to students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide academic advising to students on course selection, degree requirements, and academic goals.
  • Assist students in developing educational plans and setting academic objectives.
  • Offer support and guidance to students facing academic, personal, or career-related challenges.
  • Conduct one-on-one counseling sessions to address student concerns and provide resources.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to promote student success and satisfaction.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops, seminars, and informational sessions on academic and career-related topics.
  • Monitor students academic progress and intervene when necessary to prevent academic setbacks.
  • Stay informed about academic policies, regulations, and procedures to provide accurate guidance to students.
  • Utilize appropriate technology and resources to maintain student records and data.
  • Participate in retention initiatives and outreach efforts to support student persistence.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, Psychology, or related field.
  • Previous experience in academic advising, counseling, or student support services.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and empathetically with students and colleagues.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in maintaining student records and documentation.
  • Knowledge of educational and career pathways, academic requirements, and resources available to students.
  • Ability to assess student needs and provide appropriate support and referrals.
  • Proficiency in using technology for student management and communication.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and ethical practices in counseling and student services.
  • Effective problem-solving skills to address diverse student needs and challenges.
