an Academic Counselor, you will be responsible for providing guidance and support to students in their academic pursuits. You will assist students in developing educational plans, selecting appropriate courses, and navigating academic requirements. Additionally, you will offer support and resources to help students overcome challenges and achieve their academic and career goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Individual Counseling:
- Meet one-on-one with students to discuss their academic progress, goals, and challenges.
- Provide personalized guidance and support tailored to each student's needs and aspirations.
- Assist students in developing academic plans that align with their interests, abilities, and career objectives.
- Course Selection and Planning:
- Help students select appropriate courses based on their academic goals, degree requirements, and interests.
- Assist students in creating semester-by-semester academic plans to ensure timely progress towards graduation.
- Provide information about course offerings, prerequisites, and scheduling options.
- Academic Support Services:
- Connect students with academic support resources such as tutoring, study skills workshops, and academic advising centers.
- Offer guidance on study habits, time management, and other strategies for academic success.
- Assist students in accessing accommodations for disabilities or other special needs.
- Career and Educational Planning:
- Provide information about career options, graduate school programs, and other educational opportunities.
- Assist students in exploring potential majors, minors, and concentrations based on their interests and career goals.
- Help students develop resumes, cover letters, and other application materials for internships, jobs, and graduate programs.
- Student Advocacy and Support:
- Serve as an advocate for students academic and personal needs within the university or college community.
- Provide referrals to campus resources such as counseling services, financial aid offices, and student organizations.
- Support students in navigating academic policies, procedures, and appeals processes.
- Data Management and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of student interactions, academic plans, and progress towards degree completion.
- Generate reports and analyses to track student outcomes, identify trends, and assess the effectiveness of counseling services.
- Ensure compliance with relevant privacy laws and institutional policies regarding student records.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in counseling, education, psychology, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Previous experience in academic advising, counseling, or student services preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Knowledge of academic programs, degree requirements, and university policies and procedures.
- Familiarity with career development theories, assessment tools, and resources.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Proficiency in computer applications and student information systems.
Working Conditions:
