How to Manage International Relocation with Pets

Pet transport is usually seen as one of the most hectic things people face when moving internationally, as it requires lots of things to take into consideration. Pets become an indispensable part of family and cannot be parted. If you’re also planning to take your pets along back home, it is advisable to check your country’s laws to see if there are any special laws or prohibitions regarding pets as some countries restrict the entry of certain animals for the fear that it might harm their eco system.

Once you have assured that you can take your pets along back home, here are a few ways to relocate them with ease.

Moving pets by International Pet Relocation Expert

·         The best way to ensure the safest move for your pets is to hire an expert international pet relocation service. They provide you with the necessary information you require to make your pets’ move stress free and get everything done from pre-move to pet flight to the post move.

·         Check the licensing and moving insurance policies of the selected international mover. Try to get everything in writing.

·         Ask them for a detailed cost estimate to avoid surprises later. Keep all the details of your pets handy for the mover to assess the exact cost estimate.

·         Some animals get nervous while travelling alone and make a mess in their containers or cages. You know your pet better than anyone else – if you feel your pet may panic, let the relocation guys know his nature beforehand.

Moving Pets by Plane

·         You can also relocate your pets by plane, however, not all animals are allowed for travel on regular passenger planes. Also, airlines maintain the right to refuse acceptance of any animal that is exhibiting aggressive behavior. Therefore, you must check pet travel to international destinations policy of different airlines and choose the one that best suits your requirements.

·         Pets may travel either as carry on or checked baggage, or air cargo as per the airline’s policies. Carry on pets must be carried in small containers to fit under the seat in front of the passenger.

·         Your pet should be healthy and fit to travel by air and must be accompanied by a recent health certificate issued by a licensed vet.

Other Miscellaneous Things to Consider:

·         Keep your pet’s medical records handy. Ask the current vet to give you a copy of your pet’s vaccinations, medical history and health certifications since you will need a new vet back home.

·         Have a provision for at least one week’s pet’s food and medication with you in case of an emergency. No vet prescribes medicines without a prior doctor/ patient relationship, which can cause delays in case you need medication for your pet right away.

·         Pets may feel nervous and confused in new surroundings.  Upon your arrival back home, immediately place all the familiar and necessary things your pet needs. Introduce him to your family members who might be new to him so that he feels safe.
