4 tips to absorb and retain information

Ever found yourself ten minutes into a meeting, only to realise you have no idea what anyone is talking about? Maybe it’s just one of those days where it’s hard to focus, or maybe you need help with learning to better absorb and retain information. If you’re already beginning to lose interest in reading this, then look alive, because this is for you.

Mental restoration

Let’s get down to business – yes, business! The fundamentals of a well-oiled business depend on minimising wasted time and having a team that knows just what they’re doing. To make your memory operate as well as a successfully company, start off by  trying memory exercises. You can try to memorise a list of things, for example, or work on solving a maths problem without the help of a calculator. This gives your brain the exercise it needs to be able to accept information more readily and indelibly in the future.

Put your back into it

Though brain exercises give the hibernating mind some much-needed mental exertion, physical exercises can play a significant role in doing the same thing – just in a different way. It has been proven that physical exercise can assist with decreasing maladies related to memory loss and stress, so relieving the brain of such strain helps in clearing your mind and ensuring that it can absorb fresh information. While you’re a beginner, try an activity that requires hand-eye coordination; you can play basketball for a good workout or throw darts for something less strenuous. Then when you’re ready for more, learn to juggle!

Get some sleep, you workaholic

Poor memory retention could be a product of your inability to focus. Drifting off into a daydream is no crime – we all do it from time to time. But if you often find yourself with low levels of concentration, it could be a sign of sleep deprivation. Remember, you’re a human being – not a machine! Sleep is so much more than just something to do to help you pay closer attention to your boss. Your body needs rest to survive! No matter- how much time off you need to take to replenish your energy levels, a good boss will always prefer an employee that’s spirited and attentive to a mentally absent employee that calls in sick.

Stenographer, read the minutes back

If the problem persists, then you may need more perseverance and hard work. While you work on expanding your mental capacity taking notes as information is being given to you will help protect you against information lost through the gaps in your attention span. Think of it as simply storing information in an external brain. What’s great is you can retrieve this information anytime you need, and as many times as you want. Memory loss? What’s that again?

A healthy brain is imperative to consistently soaking up and sustaining large amounts of information. Your brain is a vast repository, but fallible, like everything that exists on this earth. You know best when your body needs rest. Don’t turn a deaf ear to signs of exhaustion! Fine-tune the little things now, and you will thank yourself later.
